Sunday, October 4 did two jobs on the South End's fall calendar. It was the last day of the Open Studios group show at Piano Craft Gallery, 793 Tremont Street. It was also one of the seven Sundays from October 4 through November 15 in the SoWa Open Market season on Harrison Avenue.
Those two dates were firm. Most of what the neighborhood has coming this fall is not. Agosto, the most anticipated restaurant opening, has already moved once. Its sibling bakery has no date at all. A branch library has been closed without a reopening date.
Several weekend roundups published this month describe the SoWa Open Market as running through October. SoWa's own calendar lists Sundays from May 3 through November 15, 11am to 5pm. October has four of them, on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. November adds the 1st, 8th and 15th. SoWa's calendar extends the season through November 15.
This is the market's 23rd season. It launched in 2003 and runs rain or shine at 500 Harrison Avenue and Thayer Street, a pedestrian-only block among artist studios, galleries and retail shops. Boston Uncovered's season preview counted more than 250 vendors expected across the year and a rotating lineup of five food trucks each Sunday. No single Sunday shows all of that. SoWa's site keeps a vendor list, a food truck list and an event calendar with live music and brewery takeovers, so the weekly lineup can be checked before leaving the house.
The outdoor season ends on November 15. SoWa also runs a winter holiday market indoors, which Boston Uncovered describes as the largest indoor market in New England. Its dates were not in the material available for this post, so the calendar on SoWa's site is the place to confirm them.
South End Open Studios ran September 19 and 20. More than 100 artists opened studios across 10 locations, including the BCA Artist Studios Building at 551 Tremont, 46 Waltham, 35-59 Wareham and three addresses on Harrison Avenue. The event has been produced by United South End Artists since 1986, and it runs on a schedule that leaves no second weekend.
The group show at Piano Craft Gallery ran through Sunday, October 4. It brought together work from more than 40 South End artists across nine artist buildings, and the gallery described it as a preview for deciding which studios to visit. After the studio weekend, it offered one room with work from a large share of the participants.
Chef Veo Robert's Laotian pop-up, Phaeng & Phiu, has a fixed address for now, and the address has an expiration date. The Boston Globe reports that the pop-up is in residence at the South End tiki bar Shore Leave until the end of the year, when the bar closes.
Robert has cooked at Radius, Menton, Myers + Chang, Bar Mezzana and Foxglove Terrace. He launched Phaeng & Phiu last year, naming it for his parents and building it around the food of his native Laos. Until this residency, catching it meant showing up at the right restaurant on the right night. It has appeared at Merai, Rubato and Vee Vee. The Globe lists goi pa, a kingfish crudo, along with krapow gai dumplings, green papaya salad and grilled prawns. The paper also expresses hope that the residency leads to a permanent space, though no such plan has been reported.
Shore Leave's closing is set for year end, and the exact last day was not in the reporting. That leaves about three months.
Agosto is chef George Mendes's tasting-menu restaurant at 1673 Washington Street. Mendes ran the Michelin-starred Aldea in New York until it closed in 2020, and he came to Boston in 2023 as opening chef of Amar at the Raffles hotel in Back Bay.
When Boston Magazine reported the details in December 2025, Agosto was expected around summer 2026. It is a 45-seat restaurant in a former dry-cleaning space, with a chef's counter serving a tasting menu and an à la carte menu in the bar area. The Boston Globe's fall openings roundup, published September 23, now says Agosto is slated to open in November. That is a season later than the earlier estimate, and it is one report from one outlet.
Baby Sister, the adjacent bakery-café, was described in December as arriving later in the year. No date for it turned up in any recent source. A November target for Agosto is a reasonable thing to watch for. It is a poor thing to build a dinner reservation around until a booking page exists.
| Item | Date | How firm it is |
|---|---|---|
| Open Studios group show, Piano Craft Gallery, 793 Tremont St | Ends October 4 | Listed on the organizer's page |
| SoWa Open Market, 500 Harrison Ave | Sundays through November 15, 11am to 5pm | On SoWa's own calendar |
| Phaeng & Phiu at Shore Leave | Through year end | Reported by the Globe, no exact last day |
| Agosto, 1673 Washington St | November | Moved from summer, per Boston Magazine and the Globe |
| Baby Sister | Later in the year | No date found |
| Boston Public Library, South End Branch | Closed until further notice | No reopening date on the branch page |
The library is the only entry on the list with no date at either end. The South End Branch page says the branch is closed until further notice because of facilities issues and points to an update for details. Nothing on the page gives a reopening date.
A few rooms carry no expiration date this fall, and they are reasonable fallbacks once the dated items are handled.
Louis Corner took over the Tremont Street space that housed Barbara Lynch's Butcher Shop for 20 years. The Infatuation calls it a solid neighborhood bistro where the cocktails carry the menu, with grapefruit turning up in at least three of them. It backs those with bar snacks like oysters rockefeller, spicy fried chicken sliders and steak tartare. Resy's September list notes it now has a full liquor license.
Bey, a shoebox-sized Lebanese restaurant on Shawmut Avenue, appears on Resy's list among the South End's hottest current reservations, which points toward booking ahead. Mesob, on Washington Avenue, serves Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes such as gored gored and berbere-spiced chicken stew, scooped up with injera.
For the next few weeks, the sequence is straightforward. The remaining Sundays through November 15 belong to SoWa. The Shore Leave residency runs until the bar closes at year end. Agosto and Baby Sister get a wait-and-see until they post real reservation dates.
Colin Bayley and the Bayley & Natoli team work across the South End year-round, and a Sunday at SoWa makes as good a starting point as any for a conversation. When your own timeline picks up a date, request a home valuation and market plan.
